Little Steps was founded in 2004 by Mandy Black. Its existence was birthed
out of Ms. Black’s
own personal experiences as a young parent.
Acknowledging the level of difficulty for
parenting and still trying to accomplish
her goals, Ms. Black began mentoring several
girls from the local community
who were
just
like her, young parents facing huge obstacles.
Being a visionary, she knew that starting a
program that would help these
young teen
mothers to overcome their obstacles had great potential to impact
many lives. Realizing it
would take time, talent and resources, she
began
recruiting volunteers; building a
curriculum; soliciting donations; and planning fundraisers to provide quality services to its participants.
Her vision was to create a non-judgmental environment for teen parents during
pregnancy
and their journey into the world of parenthood.
Her goal was to
provide program participants
with resources, life skills, and encouragement
in
their time of need so that they could become
confident, healthy and self-sufficient
while learning to become better parents.
Little Steps is a credible resource in the community and has been recognized
on several occasions in the Greenville Journal for its efforts to impact a
community of teen parents. It is commended for assisting teen parents with
pursuing future goals such as completing post-secondary education, and even
sometimes becoming an entrepreneur. It is with the assistance of the
community that Little Steps continues to make strides to support youth who are
facing difficulty as they strive to become the best parents possible.
